
Hello world! As a member that is new of web log group, I am so excited to share many of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They often make inquiries like ‘what do you do on a daily basis?’ or ‘do you must work with the summer? once I talk to my buddies and family about my work,’ I’m hoping that through my additions that are monthly this weblog, you’ll get a better idea of what we do each day as admission counselors.
So allow’s focus on the current. This morning I woke up during the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early to some, reasonable to others, but we can let you know, this at 7:45 have always been, I was exhausted (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. early morning) You see, my trip from Los Angeles was supposed to reach Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become exact.) But instead, due to a wet cockpit seat (I kid you maybe not,) my flight was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school check out this morning always has coffee waiting for me, and I was specially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) Although i give in regards to a 30 minute presentation to pupils once I visit, at this school it’s an alternate format which consists mostly of me answering questions. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think we only stuttered a times that are few.
I’d some time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for some break fast and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 minutes ahead of a visit, but frequently i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I ate my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. University counselors are always full of information about students, their schools, and usually life in general. In addition reminds me personally of my high school times where We spent lot of time on my counselor’s couch.

My visit that is third today to a school I’ve never checked out before. There were about eight students present and something was even wearing a USC t-shirt. This pupil, let’s call him Brandon, said about his recent visit to campus so we had a moment to gush over how pretty USC is. I enjoy sharing common USC experiences with pupils, especially when i am overseas.
Finally, between my third and fourth see this morning, I became able to grab a 6′ veggie pleasure as I drove to the next school that is high. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.
After my fifth and final go to today, I returned to my hotel, debriefed my day in the shape of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My instinct that is first is to test my email. Oh look! I got a message from Brandon I mentioned thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something. Love when that happens!

The Verdict: Not at USC.
Every August that is late/early, you will find 5 or so emails in my inbox every morning because of the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar general format. ‘Hello Jessica- just wanted to tell you I play baseball and I can’t wait to apply to USC that I go to ABC High School. I have always wanted to be considered a pupil in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but what am I supposed to say? Good luck with your baseball season? Every winter, I have similar emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the springtime musical, and that USC is still their very first choice. Awesome, but chances are I already saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.
At USC, we usually do not track a student’s interest outside for the application that is actual admission choice purposes. Attending our programs is a way that is wonderful learn more about USC, but likely to an event or sending email messages like those I described will not boost your chances of admission to your university.

A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.
Consider that some schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all students to reach away to them, while other people may expect students into the geographic area to check out campus. The idea of demonstrated interest differs, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.
